As we come into a down period of the year (3 weeks before the break, 2.5 weeks off from school, and a total of 11 weeks off before our next tournament) we will transition to getting stronger and smarter about the rules of the game. We will split time between the golf course and workouts and brush up on rules. With limited time before the sun sets at the course, the burden of course practice falls on the players. Practice books will be distributed to guide individual practice on the weekends and to track progress. Every year there are one or two players that grab the opportunity to improve and never look back. We get back to the course in mid January and teammates are left scratching their head as to why suddenly they're not as good as a team mate or two. Simple! They worked harder than you!
In addition to the self paced work, all of the players are expected to play on the El Paso Junior Golf Tour. More opportunities to play competitive golf here locally and get better. Sun Country will also start up right around the corner.

Players that did not make the trip to Georgetown competed in the Andress Invitational at Painted Dunes GC. Painted Dunes is always a challenge, even for the city's best players. This tournament was another tall test for our newer and less experienced players. Again we were short handed, only entering a team of 4 players but the girls responded. We had a first year player nearly break 100 and another finish with a couple of bad holes that could have been a career round.
436 - Bella Ceniceros(11) 106; Davine Bashur(11) 103; Emily Deguire(11) 101; Sofia Enriquez(9)127 I learned a long time ago from some very successful coaches that no matter how good you are, you always play in tournaments where the best teams play. Every year we enter the season with the goal of reaching the Texas 5/6A Girls’ Golf Championship which happens to be 570 miles away in the Austin, TX area. Last year only 7 seven strokes kept us out at the 1-5A Regional Championship. With this philosophy in mind, we attempt to play in the State Championship Preview every year to get a look at the course and conditions, gain experience at different altitude, increased humidity, Bermuda greens, etc. Unfortunately, we were a bit undermanned with two key players not able to make the tournament. During the 2nd round of play, for the first time this year, we finally started to swing free with confidence and I noticed things start to slow down for the younger players. We were more mentally into every shot and had chances to post some great scores. Even though the scores didn’t reflect it, the girls fought till the end, never giving up and improving by 4 places from day one to two.
351/365 – Andrea Imai(12) 93/92; Priscilla Padilla(9) 94/84; Paloma Palmer(12) 110/102; Madison Venegas(9) 102/91 I would like to take a moment and thank all of our parents!
The 3rd Annual Rockwind Roundup proved to be a great test for our young team. The tournament continues to be a win-win-win-win (you get the point) for our team. As the host school, the entire team gets to travel out of town. Always a plus for the players. Learning how to share the bathroom with 3 other teammates, manage school work missed, eat at new restaurants, and for some be away from parents for the first time is a valuable life experience. This year’s field featured stiff competition from our region including Lubbock Cooper, Midland High, Permian, Frenship and Lee to name a few. The venue is first class as Rockwind Community Links is a well manicured and very challenging course that requires shot making ability not found at many other courses. The relatively short commute for an out of towner is also a plus for families wishing to cheer on the daughters. The field was split after day one scores and our first team placed a well deserved 4th. We were able to field a 2nd team as well even though we did not have all our players attend the tournament. Not many high school players get to play their first official tournament rounds out of town at a tough course playing in tough field. Our new players proved to themselves that they can hit shots, make putts and belong out there. Although we allowed the course to beat us up a little and we did not post the scores we wanted, we continue to learn how to compete at a high level and play under pressure. Some galleries were 10-20 spectators deep.
351/365 – Andrea Imai(12) 87/88; Priscilla Padilla(9) 88/84; Lauren Torres(12) 94/101; Paloma Palmer(12) 92/98; Madison Venegas(9) 95/95; 452/449 - Bella Ceniceros(11) 103/98; Davine Bashur(11) 102/103; Emily Deguire(11) 120/125; Sofia Enriquez(9)127/123 Every year Eastwood hosts a beginner tournament to allow those new to the game a chance to get their feet wet. This year, we hosted at Lone Star GC and conducted at rules clinic followed by a 9 hole tournament. Three players represented Trooper Golf and performed well.
Julissa Estrada(9) 55; Sofia Enriquez(9) 55; Emily Deguire(11) 57 So how do you start competitive play only 3 weeks into the school year and after you graduate 7 seniors that all qualified for the 1-5A Regional Championship last year? Jump in the fire and defend your title with a team that included a 2 freshman, a new sophomore, and upperclassmen finding their stride. The girls battled to a 4th place finish in the first division in a field that featured multiple below par rounds. There were definitely some nervous swings during the rounds but I could not be happier with the outcome. As the season progresses we will continue to build our experience, improve executing course strategy and build our strength and stamina.
333/371 – Andrea Imai(12) 81/89; Priscilla Padilla(9) 75/95; Maya Vargas(10) 91/94; Lauren Torres(12) 85/93; Paloma Palmer(12) 95/98; Medalists-Madison Venegas(9) 88/100; Bella Ceniceros(11) 100/117; Davine Bashur(11) 117/127 Through some very hard work of current and past Eastwood coaches, Eastwood and Ysleta ISD administrators, and the staff at Butterfield Trail; we are very excited to announce that both the boys’ and girls’ teams will be utilizing Butterfield Trail as our practice facility. Over the last few years we were consistently challenged to find a facility that offered a challenging course, outstanding range and short game practice areas, and great staff to work with. Vista Hills, Lone Star and Ascarate were and continue to be great places to work on one’s game but to have all needs filled at one venue is just tremendous. I would like to personally thank Mr. Boatright, our Principal at Eastwood and Julio Lopez, our Athletic Coordinator for their hard work and support of our program.
